Photograph, Round Hill sluicing | A black and white photograph of a sluicing a rock face at Round Hill. Gold mining in the Longwoods of Western Southland began in the mid 1860's, by the 1870's, it had extended to the Round Hill area. Ground abandoned by Europeans was taken over by Chinese miners, with good results. Water was supplied to the claims by water races, the largest of which was Ports Race. The first section was competed in 1877, by H H Port, to supply water to his claim. The Chinese asked Port to extend the race to Round Hill and a partnership was formed, the race being extended using Chinese labour. Larger creeks were crossed by using timber flume structures as flooding would destroy a simple log structure. The races picked up water from the surrounding streams, but lack of water in the summer often constrained operations, despite some large storage dams being constructed. With the advent of hydraulic sluicing in the 1890's, and purchase of mining rights from the smaller prospectors, the Chinese were gradually squeezed out. The Round Hill Mining Company Ltd (which was financed from London) became a major player, covering a lot of ground and employing many men. They operated five elevators and their gold saving tables were able to collect very fine gold. They worked their claims 24 hours of the day using an electric lighting plant, obtained from England. They acquired most of the water rights and owned more than 85 mining rights. Mining in the area continued intermittently until the 1950's when it was abandoned and the sites fell into disrepair. | Ross, Charles | Te Hikoi Museum / Te Hikoi Museum |

Photograph, View of South Riverton 1904 | A view of South Riverton in 1904. Looking from Dallas Point to Waldeck. Boats of various sizes can be seen tied to the Dallas Point wharf in the foreground and in the background the hill is dotted with various dwellings. This image has been used as the cover photo of the book 'Records of Early Riverton and District' copies of which can be viewed in Te Hikoi's research room. Riverton was appointed a Customs Port of Entry on 3rd January 1862 and in June 1862 was appointed a Warehousing Port for Customs purposes and approved as a port for the importation of tobacco. There was a thriving coastal trade but as the ships became larger, entry to the port became difficult. In 1913 attempts were made to dredge the harbour but this proved unsuccessful, and the coastal trade died out. | Ross, Charles | Te Hikoi Museum / Te Hikoi Museum |

Photograph, The 'Rose Casey' pictured across the river at the wharf | An image of the 'Rose Casey' at the wharf in Riverton. The Rose Casey was purchased in 1903, by the newly formed Southland Shipping Company by Captain McGilvray, with Mr Chandler as the chief engineer. According to a Western Star article, the boat was to bring down a load of kauri timber from Whangarei, before commencing a freight service between Dunedin and Riverton, calling at Invercargill on-route. In September 1905 the vessel was leaving for Stewart Island, when the engine failed while steaming down the harbour; the boat ended up on the sandbar at the harbour entrance. The crew made it ashore, but the waves made accessing the boat to treacherous, and the timber cargo, along with a draught horse trapped below, were lost. It was hoped to salvage the boat but the bad weather broke it up and swept it all away. | Ross, Charles | Te Hikoi Museum / Te Hikoi Museum |
