Postcard, Charles Walker & Friend | This photographic postcard is studio-made and depicts two soldiers. The soldier on the left has been identified as Charles Edward Walker 46813, who prior to enlisting was a self-employed plumber from Wyndham. Charles was born at Mataura in 1893 to William Goldsby and Elizabeth nee Smith. Interestingly, not long after Charles' birth, William deserted the family and Elizabeth went back to her first husband's name, Walker. Charles also took the Walker name. In 1910, Elizabeth formally divorced William Goldsby on the grounds of desertion, and also attempted to claim financial compensation for the maintenance of herself and her children. Charles enlisted with the 25 Infantry Reinforcements D Company of the Otago Regiment. He entered Sling Camp in July 1917, and not long after was transferred to the 4th Battalion of the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade with the rank of Rifleman. In October 1917, Charles arrived in France, and was posted with A Company. On 8 October Charles was on the front line, however the following day he was posted to the reinforcements camp, narrowly avoided the Battle of Passchendaele. On 20 October Charles was on the front line again, and saw active service at Ypres. He remained with his unit for the remainder of the war. In 1925 Charles married Lilly Beatrice Anna Chittock. The couple had one child, Iris Mabel Walker. Charles died on 8 July 1959 aged 66. Unfortunately we don't know who the soldier on the right is. If you recognise him please get in touch via the Comments section. | The Fancy Dress Studio | Wyndham & Districts Historical Museum / Wyndham & Districts Historical Museum |

Visualizing Creativity: An Analysis of the Relationship Between Creativity and Visualization Through an Overview of Theories of Creativity Visualization Technologies | The broad purpose of this thesis is to present an interdisciplinary analysis of the relationship between creativity and visualization. More specifically, the research engages with artistic, cultural, technical and scientific modes of recognizing and evaluating creativity. The thesis explores the potential for new visualization technologies to represent, communicate or interactively engage with theories of creativity in order to extend our understanding of creativity and its application across differing domains. The research has been developed from two parallel but previously under-related discourses. The first informs a discussion of general problems in the study of creativity across different domains, while the second focuses more on studies of artistic creativity using computer technologies. The thesis gives an overview of various creative theories and the neuroscience approach to creativity. It demonstrates that most studies on creativity focus on the process of creativity and measuring creativity. The process of creativity includes where the creative thought is produced which involves consideration of individual, social and environmental factors. The measurement of creativity focuses on evaluating the individual ability of creativity. The subject of much study on creativity is human and other elements related to the human ability of creativity. Analyses of artistic creativity engaging with computer technologies in the form of case studies raise questions on how to understand the โmachineโs creativityโ and what is the role of the โmachine as creatorโ in the study of creativity. This investigation of art practice engaging with technology indicates a contribution of the "machine as creatorโ to a new knowledge of creativity. The above analysis of the various definitions, theories and concepts of creativity and visualization indicates that there is a gap in a creative technology-based approach to creativity. The subsequent investigation of visualization technology indicates that the technology itself plays a key role in transforming or interpreting data into visual media for scientific findings. The result of the study also indicates some future directions for research in this emerging interdisciplinary field. | Li, Richard | Tuwhera / Auckland University of Technology
Biomimicry As a Strategy to Enhance Ecologically Regenerative Design | Retrofitting and redesigning of cities has become more imperative as the pressures of climate change and rapid global urbanization continues to grow and this demands urgent responses. Unfortunately, the current design of buildings and whole cities leads to an overall degradation of natural resources and loss of biodiversity. As a result, it appears beneficial to observe and analyze how nature addresses similar issues while continuing to remain sustainable within itself. Biomimicry is the term used to describe the imitation of these natural systems and strategies within human innovation to solve challenges. Understanding the systems of life within natural organisms and utilizing them in urban design and architecture, can be the starting point of the creation and evolution of sustainable cities that aim to become regenerative. This thesis examines the three levels of biomimicry (organism, behavioral and ecosystem) and analyzes specific case studies within these to elucidate the best approach to produce sustainable and regenerative outcomes. Ecosystem based biomimicry has been shown to achieve this. The thesis explores a complex field that correlates ecosystem functions, processes and services, and the potential design strategies required by designers in order to achieve self-sufficient architecture with ecologically improved performance. It has been concluded that the built environment must be expected to actively contribute towards building firmer ecological and social relationships as opposed to being idle contributors to Global warming and the degradation of the natural world. | Syed, Yaseen Fatima | Tuwhera / Auckland University of Technology
Theo: The Production and Promotion of a Microfilm Exploring the Experience of a Chinese Immigrant in Auckland | The film Theo is my filmic exploration of one unique facet of New Zealand society โ the lives of Chinese immigrants overseas. Motivated by the question: โAre you happy in New Zealand?โ the experiences of a young Chinese man (my flatmate Theo) in Auckland are closely portrayed in an eight minute long microfilm which is an emerging film form originating from Chinese Internet users. The genre of docudrama is employed to condense three yearsโ experiences into the eight minute long plot. Various documentary and dramatic techniques are employed to create an aesthetic of reality in Theo. The thesis also explores strategies for promoting the film to its target audiences in China. | Dai, Wenrui | Tuwhera / Auckland University of Technology
Creating Cinematic Scientific Visualizations | This project is concerned with the cinematic form of scientific visualizations and the hyper-realistic style it utilizes. The research attempts to answer the question of what elements make up a hyper-realistic style, what are the techniques and software applications utilized in creating this style and what are the underlying concepts and theories that provide insight into why this style is so successful at attracting audience interest. The production requirement of this exegesis will be the development of hyper-realistic imagery formatted using rules of logic borrowed from postmodern teaser trailers. Current examples of scientific visualization will be examined to determine the elements that create the hyper-realistic style they employ and several 3D animation, fluid dynamic, compositing and rendering software will be explored to examine their implementation in this type of production. Elements of cognitive theory relating to cinema and perception were reviewed and considered as was an aesthetics based in current digital visual culture; relevant elements were used in the production process. The project is concerned with a complex subject that intersects science, digital technology and art and a methodology providing a systematic approach is explored. The practical production of this exegesis, the 3D animated vignettes, combine elements derived from the artistic and scientific approaches reviewed. The overall goal of these animations was to explore the application of various software's in creating and applying the elements of the hyper-realistic style. | Mendelow, David Robert | Tuwhera / Auckland University of Technology

Mind Your Step: A Sculptural Investigation of Spatial Awareness and Site | Questioning my existence in this land and exploring the impact my presence has in it, Mind Your Step is a practice-led investigation searching multiple sites that combine to create a dialogue between process and material. Exploring a new environment and enquiring how materiality reflects my own observations. With a focus on Aotearoa, New Zealand and the landscape within Te Ika-a-Mฤuiโthe North Island, I look to establish a first-hand understanding of what has influenced the shaping of the landscape. Analysing how other artistโs practices explore ideas of site and history in an attempt to capture the essence of a place, through careful consideration for material and site with an ethic of care. I am questioning what it is to exist in a space, what it means to be a visitor in a space and how to conduct oneself. The materials glass, metal, and stone are used to sculpturally articulate my own experiences of geological movements and human activity. The overarching methodology of โthe walk', a non-site observation, led this investigation. I am interested in paradigms around care, which I consider through my relationship with materials and how care influences decisions. | Walker, Charles | Tuwhera / Auckland University of Technology |
