Cecil Henry Matthews

NZ4210090 World War II, 1939-1945 Cecil Henry Matthews (13 October 1914 – 8 November 1987) was born in Christchurch, he represented New Zealand at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney. At the Berlin Olympics, Matthews competed in the 5000 metres but was eliminated in the heats. He also faced tendon issues, possibly due to training conditions on the ship Wanganella. Under the guidance of Olympic 1500 metres winner Jack Lovelock, Matthews achieved significant success at the 1938 British Empire Games. He won gold medals in both the three-mile and six-mile events, despite having no prior experience in the latter distance. Matthews attributed his victories to Lovelock's coaching. Domestically, Matthews won the New Zealand national three-mile title in 1936 and 1938. During World War II, he served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. After the war, he moved to Auckland, where he lived until his death in 1987. 13 Oct 1914 War Medal 1939-1945 New Zealand War Service Medal 08 Nov 1987

WWII Military Draft ListsHenry Matthews        🔍 ASH

From 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.

NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
