Henry James Radford
23197 World War II, 1939-1945 Married to Shirley Isabel Radford, four children; Louise Alison, Murrary Charles, Jennifer Ann and David Alan Radford Lieutenant H. J. Radford (Oflag VI B) Letter 1: 15/2/1942 Goodness knows what's happened to the mail. Very little has been happening here - the weather has been very cold with continual snow. Had a great battle with the RAF after appel last night. The symphony concert gave performances this week and they were very good. The next show is another "swing" session. Have managed to get hold of some insurance books with the intention of doing a bit of swat. Letter 2: 15/3/1942 One letter since I last wrote - 10 Nov - still nothing much to report from here. No parcels yet to hand, although there are some November ones from NZ in the camp. I'm still very well, but I must say I get a bit bored at times. I haven't received any photos. (wife has sent about 3 dozen snaps and he hasn't received any yet.) (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 4, July 1942, p.5)) Lieutenant H. J. Radford (Oflag VI B) Letter: 4/9/1942 Sorry only a card this time but no letters issued yet. Have just completed packing preparatory to moving to Oflag VII B. One party has already gone and also the RAF and most of the older officers have gone to different camps. Received letter of 6 June and also my February parcel. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 8, January 1943, p.7)) Lieutenant H. J. Radford (Oflag VII B) Letter 1: 20 September We've been here just over a week and are just settling in. The Camp itself is certainly more pleasant than the last one with quite a few trees around and with plenty of grass playing fields. The huts that we are in are quite new and very clean but hold 32 each, divided up by cupboards and beds into messes of 8. So far we haven't been able to gather our messes together but hope for a general shuffle round soon. The parcel situation is a bit obscure at present but we have had a small issue from bulk to tide us over. The journey here was very refreshing, we travelled in 'carriages' for a change with a short walk at the end, through rather a pleasing old town. The Camp is situated in a small green valley, the far side of which is covered with trees, all very pleasant. Naturally we haven't had any mail since we arrived. Letter 2: 24 September We are slowly settling down in our new camp and have been fortunate in being able to get our mess together. Our 2 Canadian messmates (from Dieppe) are settling down. They're very decent chaps and their drawl is still a novelty. The only snag at present is that we only have a carbide light but have been promised electric light shortly. I had another game of football yesterday and hope to have a game of baseball soon, the latter game having received quite a fillup from all the Canadians in Camp. Cooking facilities in our rooms are not quite as good as the last Camp but we have a canteen kitchen which each block uses in turn and they cook things pretty well. Our turn comes round every 10 days. Letter 3: 28 November My November clothing parcel arrived today, including the shorts, which I asked for in my last letter. It certainly filled up the gaps in my clothing and I don't know that there is anything to suggest in the next few parcels. Letter 4: 20 October Still no mail from you but one from your mother - 1 Dec 1941 - Pretty swift work what!! No news from here - the reprisals are still on the the boys in the chains are pretty browned off. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 9, March 1943, p.21)) Captain H. J. Radford (Oflag VII B) Letter: 21 February Have just completed a week's exams - 6 papers including Economics, Mercantile Law, Accountancy, Secretarial Practice, English and Commercial Arithmetic. The exam was the Chartered Institute of Secretaries. The final I think I'll sit for in June. We have now got electric light in our hut which is an improvement. WWII Military Draft Lists
Henry Radford 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
