Fox, William, 1812-1893. At Maungatapere. Mr Walton's place, near Wangarei | A scene showing the development of Henry Walton's farm, when William Fox visited Maungatapere in 1864. A large amount of land has been cleared. Smoke to the right of the scene suggests burning of scrub, and a figure can be seen using a plough. In the distance is the harbour, with Mount Manaia and the Heads clearly depicted Henry Walton's farm was on the slopes of Maungatapere hill and was called 'Maungatapere Park'. Together with his brother Charles, he came to New Zealand in 1840 and settled at Maungatapere near Whangarei. Inscriptions: Verso - bottom left - At Maungatapere, Mr Walton's place, Wangarei (Auckld.) [in ink] In March 1864, Fox made a tour of the Kaipara and other Northland locations in the capacity of Colonial Secretary and Native Minister. Henry Walton | WALTON, HENRY, the son of a cotton manufacturer, was born in England, and with his brother came to New Zealand in the early forties. They took up land at Maungatapere, near Whangarei, and supplied trees for the Kapara timber mills, and established a lime kiln on Limestone Island in Whangarei harbour. After much heavy expenditure they succeeded in mining coal at Whangarei. Walton represented Marsden in the Auckland Provincial Council (1865-67), and sat in the Legislative Council (1863-66). In 1867 he returned to England to manage his father's business and he died there in 1896. Auckland P.C., 1865-67; N.Z.P.D., 1863-66; Cycl. N.Z., ii. | Volume 2, page 231 |
