Violin | Shetland Islands-born James Williamson (1854-1942) made this violin from kauri and tōtara - native New Zealand timbers. It has a fern-like motif carved in the back of the scroll. Williamson used native timbers for many of his violins. WoodworkerWilliamson is said to have made his first violin on a voyage from Scotland to New Zealand in 1874, using wood given to him by the captain. In 1906, he began working for the Post and Telegraph Department in Wellington as a woodworker. While there, he was commissioned to make inlaid pieces for the New Zealand government, including the stand and case to hold the pen and seal with which Prime Minister William Massey signed the Treaty of Versailles after World War I. International standingAlthough he had no formal training in violin making, Williamson became an award-winning instrument maker of international standing. After his retirement in 1923 he dedicated much of his time to violin making. This example was finished shortly before his death in 1942. | James Williamson | Te Papa Collections Online / Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Violin and case. | This violin and case has long been recognised as one of the finest achievements of James Williamson, a highly-regarded New Zealand violin-maker. Mr Williamson won several international awards for his violins, and on his retirement he continued to make violins full-time. He is one of the very few New Zealand violin-makers to be the subject of entries in major international reference works. | James Williamson | Te Papa Collections Online / Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Violin (in case) | This is an early example - if not the earliest - of a violin made entirely from New Zealand native timbers. It was made in 1922 by the self-taught, Shetland-born James Williamson, who received many awards for the violins he made. | James Williamson | Te Papa Collections Online / Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Bullock-Webster, Harold, 1855-1942: [Diary, illustrated]. Vol. X | Volume X of Harry Bullock-Webster’s illustrated diaries describes the author’s activities mainly in Auckland and Waikato 1883-84, immediately prior to his marriage to Maud Williamson, daughter of the Hon. James Williamson, one of the most powerful and influential businessmen in New Zealand. By 1883, when Volume X of the diaries was compiled, Bullock-Webster was mainly operating in Auckland and developing his own business interests, which included semi-professional sports journalism and illustration, but more predominantly trading in horses. He was also at this time courting James Williamson’s daughter Maud Williamson and was a frequent visitor to the Williamson’s lavish residence, the Pah (now the Pah Homestead in Hillsborough, Auckland). Bullock-Webster worked for the financier and land speculator Thomas Russell as an estate manager from 1881 until his marriage to Maud Williamson in 1884. The heavily illustrated diary shows mainly horses or horsing events, as well as various individuals and interiors of buildings. The 12 diaries formed the basis for Bullock-Webster's book 'Memories of sport and travel fifty years ago: from the Hudson's Bay Company to New Zealand (Auckland N.Z. : Whitcombe & Tombs, 1938) Pagination in pencil by the author on recto pages, top right. The diary is Volume X of a sequence of 12 diaries by Harry Bullock Webster, 11 of which are in the collection of the Waikato Museum. The Library holds a microfilm copy of 10 of the diaries, made in 1972, at Micro-MS-0762. Bullock-Webster, Harold 1855-1942 : Notebooks. 1882-1886. Quantity: 1 volume(s) illustrated diary. James Williamson Fedarb | FEDARB, JAMES WILLIAMSON (1817-90) was born in Kent. He arrived in north Auckland before 1840 and was connected for many years with mission work amongst the Maori. He secured some signatures of chiefs to the Treaty of Waitangi. Fedarb was an excellent Maori scholar. He died on 17 Sep 1890. N.Z. Herald, 18 Sep 1890. | Volume 1, page 138 |
James Williamson | WILLIAMSON, JAMES (1814-88), a native of Belfast, Ireland, was the son of a shipowner and first went to sea in his father's vessels on the coast of Scotland. Coming to Australia as chief officer, he arrived at Bay of Islands in the Achilles in 1839, and went into business with Thomas Crummer as merchants. After the sack of Kororareka they moved to Auckland and established themselves in Fort Street, where they also started a public-house. In 1842 they built on the edge of the beach the Victoria hotel, which stood until 1863, and for many years was managed by Hardington (q.v.). In the early fifties Crummer went to San Francisco, making speculations by which the firm lost rather heavily, but it soon recovered and the partnership lasted until Crummer's death (1861). Williamson now came more into public life, and during the Waikato war carried out profitable contracts for the commissariat department. Williamson was a founder of the New Zealand Insurance Co. and a lifelong director; was first president of the Bank of New Zealand and for some years chairman. In 1862, on the retirement of Firth, he became M.H.R. for City West (John Williamson being the other member). He spoke very seldom in Parliament and retired in 1866. In 1870 he was called to the Legislative Council, of which he was a member till his death (22 Mar 1888). He owned the Surrey Hills estate, which he cut up and sold. Cycl. NZ., ii (p); Auckland Star and N.Z. Herald, 23, 28 Mar 1888. | Volume 2, page 262 |
