Portrait of John Rutherford - from an original drawing taken in 1908 [picture]. | Condition: Good.; Title from caption.; From the Nan Kivell collection.; "Portrait of John Rutherford - from an original taken in 1908"--Caption.; Also available in an electronic version via the Internet at: http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-an23048671. "John Rutherford was for (10) years a prisoner with the Maoris, escaped & afterwards exhibited himself in England. Rutherfords' own ideas appear to have influenced the {tatner?} as far as the body work is concerned. The face is Maori {tira?} (correct). - D. The body design is not maori" (Not as here underlined)--Accompanying document. | Not specified | Digital Collections (Pictures) / National Library of Australia | |
Dempsey, John Church, 1802-1877 (attributed): [Portrait of John Rutherford, the tattooed Englishman] | Three-quarters length portrait of John Rutherford, wearing a top hat and European clothing. His face bears a full Māori moko, and he smokes a clay pipe. He carries a basket of hazelnuts over his left arm. Further tattooing can be seen on his left wrist and forearm. In his right hand he holds a wheel of fortune. See also: Craik. G. L. The New Zealanders. London, 1830, p. 86 ff, for an account of John Rutherford's time spent amongst Maori, when he was tattooed. A typed label is taped to backing board, describing the portrait and outlining the provenance, probably written either by a Mr Fox (likely to be Charles Fox, author of "Bibliographical notes on John Rutherford and Barnet Burns" (offprint from unpublished issue of "History and Bibliography" (Christchurch, 1950), pp. 228-90), an earlier owner, or by a Mr Docker (likely to be Conrad Eley Docker, an expatriate Englishman living in Tasmania and nephew of Alfred and Ethel Docker), and ending with the words 'Mr Ken Webster offered me £150 for it on 27th October 1960'. The source of the attribution to George Scharf is not known, but is likely due to stylistic similarities. Scharf is recorded as the artist of hundreds of London street portraits from around the 1820s. The typed note attached to the verso of the portrait includes the statement 'Artist unknown'. Similar portraits in the Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum have also been attributed to George Scharf, and more recently (2006) to John Church Dempsey by art historian Dr David Hansen, Senior Curator of Art, TMAG 1994-2004. One work in the Tasmanian collection has the phrase 'J. Dempsey pinxit' written on it. Other Titles - John Rutherford, a sailor who lived 10 years in New Zealand Inscriptions: Mat verso - top centre - John Rutherford, sailor who lived 10 years in New Zealand [in pencil, unidentified hand] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, glaze and Chinese white on paper 190 x 140 mm (oval) Provenance: Previously owned by a Mr Fox, who had been given it by the nephew of Mrs Alfred Docker. Previously recorded as part of the Docker collection of street characters (See Connoisseur, (1929) Vol 83, no. 331, p. 151). Presumably painted in England where Rutherford appeared in side shows. Alfred Docker's nephew gave a collection of 51 very similar watercolours to the Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum in 1956. | Dempsey, John Church, 1802-1877 Docker, Alfred, -1930? John Rutherford Blair | BLAIR, JOHN RUTHERFORD (1843-1914) was born at Balphurock, Lanarkshire, Scotland. After receiving the usual Scots education, he entered the office of a wholesale paper merchant in Glasgow, and was later employed in the same trade in several other towns. In 1860 he came to Otago, but soon left for Australia and became associated with Sands and McDougall, printers and publishers. In 1869 he came back to Wellington and entered into partnership with William Lyon (q.v.) as Lyon and Blair. Later he became sole proprietor and eventually sold the business to Whitcombe and Tombs. Blair was a member of the Wellington education board from 1880, and chairman for many years from 1882. He was chairman of the technical education board and of the Wellington College board of governors (to 1899), and was a Wellington school commissioner until their abolition. In 1899 he was appointed the first chairman of the Bank of New Zealand under the reorganisation, holding that position till 1902. He was mayor of Wellington (1898-99) and a member of the harbour board (1897-99). He was a visiting justice, a member of the prison board, and a director of several important companies in Wellington. He died on 25 Nov 1914. Cycl. N.Z., i; Who's Who N.Z., 1908; Evening Post, 25 Nov 1914. | Volume 1, page 52 |
John Rutherford | RUTHERFORD, JOHN, who was born in 1776 at Manchester, was employed for some years in a cotton factory, and went to sea when he was about 10 years of age. He took part in the storming of San Sebastian in 1813, and in 1816 was aboard the American trader Agnes, which was driven into a bay near the mouth of the Thames, New Zealand, and attacked by Maoris. Rutherford was one of those who were not killed and eaten. He was taken captive, and for 10 years he lived among the natives, tattooed like a Maori, and having two wives. He was created a chief. In 1826 he managed to escape on a trading ship, returned to England and dictated an account of his adventures. His subsequent history is unknown. Craik, The New Zealanders (1830); J. Drummond: John Rutherford, the White Chief (1908). | Volume 2, page 138 |
