  Service No.12/2559 ConflictWorld War I, 1914-1918 BiographyHenry Rowe was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Rowe, of Lower Matakana, Auckland, New Zealand. Went with the Samoan Advance, and then embarked with the 5th Reinforcements on 13 June 1915. Henry is commemorated on the Matakana District war memorial. The inscription reads: 'This monument was erected by public subscription as a thanksgiving to almighty God for peace and victory and in memory of the men of this district who fell in the Great War 1914-1918. Their Duty Nobly Done. December 1919' His rank is recorded as Private on the memorial. Henry Rowe is possibly a brother of William Charles Rowe (45918) - recorded on the Matakana War Memorial as W.R. Rowe . New Zealand at the Front (a magazine written and published and illustrated in France by men of the New Zealand Division) 1917 issue, page141. Reference should be made to a souvenir album/autograph book in the Museum Library Archives collection. This book belonged to Sergeant Bernard McGeehan and was donated by his family in 1999. The first page of the book contains the signatures of 'Officers and friends of B. McGeehan 3rd Auckland Regiment, Radio Station, Apia, Samoa'. H.J. Rowe is one of those who signed. Next of Kin: Mr C. From 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.

NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
