God Defend New Zealand - National anthem score Musical score for national anthem. Containing parts for organ/piano, as well as for treble, alto, tenor and bass. Inscribed onto the UNESCO Memory of the World NZ Register in 2013 (Registration number: 10). See: http://www.unescomow.org.nz/ Also included is a b/w photograph of the score and copies of correspondence held at the Alexander Turnbull Library (ATL) relating to the National Anthem: Thomas Bracken to John J Woods (17 September 1877, regarding copyright); Sir George Grey to John J Woods (29 July 1878, regarding a translation into te reo Maori); E. Fox to John J Woods (23 August 1878, regarding a translation into te reo Maori); R Seddon to John Woods (20 July 1897, regarding presenting a copy of the anthem to the Queen). Giving context is a letter from Johannes C Andersen at ATL to John Barr at Auckland Public Library (29 Oct 1935) describing the donation of this correspondence to Auckland Public Library. The correspondence was given to ATL by Miss Mary Woods, the daughter of Mr John Woods. Woods, John Joseph, 1849 - 1934 Kura Heritage Collections Online / Auckland Libraries
God Defend New Zealand Fronted by David Farrier, this documentary traces the history of New Zealand's national anthem. Farrier dives into the archives to tell the story of the Thomas Bracken poem set to music by John Joseph Woods; and a band of musicians have a bash at updating it in 2011. The patriotic ditty was first played at an Olympic medal ceremony when our rowing eight won gold in 1972, displacing 'God Save the Queen. It was adapted into Māori as early as 1882, but a te reo version still caused controversy in 1999. The documentary screened on TV3, the day before the 2011 Rugby World Cup final. 10 songs about faith Here are 10 songs that tackle the subject of religious faith and managed to make waves in the wider culture. New Zealand’s national anthem starts with the image of us all prostrating ourselves before God and the lyrics throughout are as devout as our other official anthem, ‘God Save The Queen’. Many people will only know the first verse of ‘God Defend New Zealand,’ which is sung in English and te reo at the beginning of each All Blacks’ test. As a result, the strongest religious sentiments in the song are lost – for example, the fifth and final verse that pleads for god to “Make us faithful unto Thee” and suggests we should all be ‘preaching love and truth to man/working out Thy glorious plan.” Even just focusing on the first verse, this isn’t a great song. The lyrics have an awkward lyrical rhythm (which forces singers to stretch ‘free’ and ‘strife’ over two syllables), which can possibly be traced to the fact that it was a poem initially (written by Thomas Bracken in the early 1870s). In 1876 there was a national competition to set it to music, which was won by John Joseph Woods. It became a national hymn in 1940 and was adopted as our second anthem in 1977. The te reo version is undeniably cooler (“Aotearoa” is a better hook line), but people flipped out when it was sung on its own before a World Cup match against England in 1999 (see David Farrier’s documentary for this and other stories about the anthem). Here is the standard version, performed by Hayley Westenra. Gareth Shute AudioCulture / AudioCulture

John Joseph Woods

WOODS, JOHN JOSEPH (1849-1934) was born and educated in Tasmania, and was for eight years a school teacher there before coming to New Zealand. He landed on the West Coast and spent some time in Nelson, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. He taught in private schools at Lawrence and Invercargill. He took a special interest in music, and played 12 instruments, but excelled with the violin. For many years he was conductor of the choir in the Roman Catholic church at Lawrence, where he was clerk to the Tuapeka county council. Woods is best known as the composer of the music to which Bracken's God Defend New Zealand was set. Bracken wrote the anthem in 1878, and dedicated it to the Governor (Normanby). The Saturday Advertiser then offered a prize for the best music, and a committee in Melbourne, consisting of Zelman, Zeplin and Siede made the award. Woods was a prominent cricketer and tennis player, and captain of the Lawrence cycling club.

Personal information from J. J. Woods; Cycl. NZ., iv (p); MS in Auckland Public Library; Saturday Advertiser, 27 Jul, 26 Oct 1878; Tuapeka Times, 20 Feb 1932.
