Survivors, Tarawera Eruption A group portrait photograph of residents of Te Wairoa who survived the Tarawera eruption of 10 June 1886. The men standing in the back row are identified from left to right as: The Bird brothers, William and John Bird, Carriers; Joseph McRae, Rotomahana Hotel keeper; Charles Humphreys, Terrace Temperance Hotel keeper; George Baker, Cook at the Rotomahana Hotel. The women seated are identified from left to right as: Mary, no last name provided; Guide Sophia Hinerangi, also known as Te Paea, Māori guide for tourists to the Pink and White Terraces; Mrs Humphreys, wife of Charles Humphreys, Hotel keeper. At the front centre is a young Māori man identified only as the assistant cook. The group are posed in the courtyard outside a wooden building. MTG Hawke's Bay / MTG Hawke's Bay
Humphreys' Boarding House, Te Wairoa, after eruption, June 10 1886 At around 2am on 10 June 1886, tourists staying at the Terrace Hotel (also known as Humphreys’ Boarding House) in Te Wairoa went outside to watch the spectacle of Mount Tarawera erupting. As ash, mud and red-hot scoria began raining down, they took shelter in Joseph McRae’s Rotomahana Hotel. All within thought their last hours had come. Twenty-one-year-old Edwin Bainbridge hastily wrote: β€˜This is the most awful moment of my life. I cannot tell when I may be called upon to meet my God. I am thankful that I find his strength sufficient for me. We are under the heavy falls of volcano …’ Here he was interrupted by part of the building caving in, and was later found crushed by a fallen balcony. Others who sheltered in the hotel survived, as did those who took refuge in guide Sophia Hinerangi’s whare. But many Māori living in less robust dwellings around the shores of Lake Tarawera perished. - From New Zealand Photography Collected by Athol McCredie, Te Papa Press, 2015. Burton Brothers

The Hunt for the Pink and White Terraces When Mount Tarawera erupted on 10 June 1886, it took over 100 lives. It was also thought to have destroyed the Pink and White Terraces on Lake Rotomahana, then hailed as the eighth wonder of the natural world. This documentary follows a team of New Zealand and American scientists β€” led by Kiwi geologist Cornel de Ronde β€” as they scour the lake floor, to see if any traces of the legendary structures remain. Also examined are the area's history, and the lead-up to the eruption. In 2018 de Ronde robustly criticised a theory that the remains of the terraces were now partly on land.  NZ On Screen / NZ On Screen
