The Queen's collection of Captain Cook relics, placed on indefinite load with the Dominion Museum, Wellington, is examined by Dr. R.A. Falla, Director of the Museum, on its arrival from the Imperial Institute, London. Comprising personal souvenirs gathered by Cook on his extensive voyaging, the collection includes a fine Maori putorino, or flute, held by Dr. Falla articles of native handiwork from British Columbia, the Pacific Islands and New Zealand, and some shells and tiny fish-hooks found in the explorer's pockets after his violent death in the Hawaiian Islands in 1779. The relics will probably be seen in other New Zealand centres after their initial display in Wellington.

Captain Cook Relics

Publicity Caption
After Captain James Cook had been killed by natives at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, in 1779 officers of his expedition recorded the circumstances on a copper plate fixed to the stump of a coconut palm. Here Dr. R.A. Falla, Director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, holds a section of that palm, given to the Museum by the Royal Librarian at Windsor Castle. It accompanied Her Majesty The Queen's collection of Cook relics, formerly held in the Imperial Institute, London, and now on indefinite loan with the Dominion Museum. The souvenirs, some of which are seen in the picture, will probably be on display later at other New Zealand centres.
