At the time of his death he was a ferry pilot bringing new aircraft from the west coast of Africa, via Khartoum. In this case he was west-bound, a passenger in a Lockheed that crashed when landing at Khartoum. Apparently the fuel tanks were not baffled on that model and the engines were starved of fuel at a crucial moment. There was a similar accident just a couple of weeks later. He was originally flying hurricanes in the Western desert and had a run-in with a Messerschmidt. He baled out and the German pilot shot him in the leg whilst coming down in his parachute. After recuperating near Cairo he was transferred to the Ferry service".
