The driving forces behind community and corporate ownership of wind energy in Europe, with implications for New Zealand | This research assesses the mechanisms that have affected community and corporate ownership of wind power in Europe. Community ownership has proven to be a great success in Denmark, Germany, and in parts of the UK. New Zealand could learn much from Europe, as a union with well-established planning and policy systems for wind energy development. This research begins with a historical review of wind power development and different ownership structures in Denmark, Germany, and the UK. The corresponding renewable energy policies and economic incentives in each case study are assessed to determine if, and how, this has affected community and corporate ownership of wind energy. Local attitudes that affect wind power will also be assessed, followed by an investigation into the planning conditions that affect wind power. Finally, this research will attempt to identify the relative significance of each factor in determining corporate and community ownership. A discussion on the implications for New Zealand wind energy development reveals some potential avenues for, and barriers to, community and corporate ownership of wind farms. | Campbell, Sarah G. | Lincoln University Research Archive / Lincoln University
Youth gang membership: Factors influencing and maintaining membership | The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of young people who were actively engaged in youth gangs. This included developing an understanding of the factors that both influenced and maintained their desire for youth gang membership. This was achieved by carrying out seven semi-structured interviews with young people aged between sixteen and twenty-three who were residing in the city of Hamilton, New Zealand. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim to ensure the experiences of these young people were accurately recorded. A thematic analysis of the data was then carried out, highlighting both the themes and subthemes across the data set. Five primary themes were identified within this data set to highlight the factors that both influenced and maintained a desire for youth gang membership. This included the influence of friends, the availability of money, and a desire to participate in antisocial behaviours within the gang. Participants also explained the importance of their neighbourhood surroundings in facilitating youth gang membership. While these overarching themes have been previously reported within literature (Goldstein, 1991; Thornberry, Krohn, Lizotte, Smith & Tobin, 2003), the young people in this study offered their subtly unique experiences and journey into the gang lifestyle. The final theme highlighted the negative evaluation that these young people perceived to experience from others which influenced and maintained their desire to pursue the gang lifestyle. This finding is not as prevalent in the existing youth gang literature, but is discussed within the social psychology literature as the "self-fulfilling prophecy". One of the main findings of this study was that these young people were engaged in the youth gang lifestyle from as young as nine years of age. Once accepted into the gang, participants explained that they then began to withdraw from school and other mainstream activities to pursue their life in the gang. It then became difficult to present these young people with an alternative to their chosen lifestyle as they had access to the support, tangible goods and respect that was desired. They were also accepted into a group of like-minded friends who existed as a substitute family. Further research is needed to better understand the variety of experiences that young people in New Zealand have when joining a youth gang. | Campbell, Sarah Michelle | ResearchCommons@Waikato / University of Waikato
The neglected religion of Philip Clairmont | Philip Clairmont (1949-1984) is discussed within New Zealand's art history as an expressionist. This was only one aspect of his oeuvre. Unfortunately, many critics and art historians have neglected the importance of religion and spirituality in Clairmont's work, which limits subsequent analysis. A scrutiny of selected examples addresses this oversight and provides an alternative interpretation which focuses on the significance of religion in Clairmont's imagery. Although he did not adhere to a particular belief system or doctrine, Clairmont did use the iconography of numerous religions to convey a myriad of personal and political concerns, often presented symbolically within the domestic interior. Initially, Clairmont's use of religion appears incompatible with his lifestyle which was shaped by drug use and involvement with hippy culture. On closer inspection however, Clairmont's interest in the seemingly secular theories of psychology, art history and drug culture reveals a strong spiritual component. Freudian psychoanalysis reinterpreted religious ideology: the unconscious, for example, shares many traits with the soul. Drug theory combined religious concepts such as transcendence and enlightenment with the unconscious. Via art history, Clairmont was exposed to a rich source of religious imagery, affecting his choice of subject matter. Religion, psychology, drug culture, and art appear diverse influences but were unified in the promotion of alternative realities which Clairmont experienced in the 1970s. In fact, Clairmont's belief in such an 'outsider view' lies at the core of his work. With the assistance of drugs and the language of symbolism, Clairmont hoped to reveal realms beyond everyday experience and to reflect his unconscious or possibly some supernatural force. The enduring preoccupation in New Zealand art with landscape and indigenous culture and spirituality has marginalised Clairmont's expressionist style. Appreciating the religious features in his work counters such marginalisation, challenges traditional perceptions of the artist, broadens the scope of analysis of his oeuvre, and enriches understandings of his imagery. | Campbell, Sarah E. | UC Research Repository / University of Canterbury Library
Investigating the Influence of Metabolic Syndrome on Cancer Immunotherapy | Cancer is a significant cause of morbidity in New Zealand, with breast and colorectal cancers being amongst the most commonly diagnosed. Therapeutic research has moved into immunotherapies, harnessing the immune system to target tumours. One approach uses virus-like particles (VLP) to activate the immune system against specific antigens found on tumour cells. This has been successful in normal weight murine models of breast and colorectal cancer. Obesity is a highly prevalent disease and contributes to the development of many cancers and may impact the efficacy of treatment. Uric acid is known to be highly immunogenic and chronic hyperuricemia (elevated serum urate) is likely to influence the immune system. The project aimed to test a known efficacious VLP therapy combined with anti-programmed death ligand (PD-L)1, against models of breast and colorectal cancer in obese and hyperuricemic mice. Mice were grafted with either breast or colorectal cancer and treated with an empty vehicle, VLP alone, or VLP + anti-PD-L1. Tumours were either immunohistochemically stained or T-cells were stained for markers of exhaustion. Populations of immune cells were also determined in the blood. Slight increases in survival were observed in obese and hyperuricemic mice with breast cancer treated with VLP, although these mouse strains had reduced survival compared to lean mice when treated with VLP + anti-PD-L1. Obese and hyperuricemic mice had reduced levels of tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) infiltrate compared to lean mice. TILs tended to have a greater phenotype associated with exhaustion in obese mice. In colorectal cancer, survival rates increased in obese mice in both treatment groups. Obese mice had similar levels of TIL infiltration to lean mice, which was reduced in hyperuricemic mice. Treatment with VLP increased TIL frequency in obese and hyperuricemic mice but not in lean mice. There were no differences in TIL exhaustion in lean and obese mice. Obese mice had higher counts of circulating neutrophils and inflammatory monocytes in the blood, but had reduced lymphoid-derived dendritic cell and B-cell counts compared to lean mice. This data suggests that obese and hyperuricemic mice may have reduced responses to immunotherapy, however this varies based on cancer type. Reduced TIL infiltration and increased T-cell exhaustion seen in the breast cancer model may play a role in this. To examine the effect of obesity on cancer treatment in patients, data from stage I and II colorectal cancer patients were analysed for obesity metrics, muscle mass, and blood parameters to compare survival in designated subpopulations. Analysing data about visceral fat showed that obese females had the lowest rate of survival, with non-obese females and all males having similar survival levels. Conversely, measuring waist circumference showed that non-obese females had lower rates of survival than obese females, while obese males had lower rates than non-obese males. Patients with low muscle mass tended to have higher survival compared to those with normal muscle mass. Obesity resulted in higher levels of lymphocytes and albumin, but lower levels of neutrophils and platelets. Sarcopenic patients had decreased levels of lymphocytes. Using visceral fat as a measurement of obesity gives different survival rates compared with standard measures. This may be useful clinically when considering body composition during prognosis. Future research will investigate the effect of body composition on the survival of stage III and IV colorectal cancer patients and may facilitate the development of more personalised and effective treatment regimens. | Woodall, Matthew | Otago University Research Archive / University of Otago
