Analysis of a CubeSat comprising an Applied Field Magnetoplasmadynamic Thruster with High Temperature Superconducting Magnet Applied-Field Magnetoplasmadynamic Thrusters (AF-MPDT) have only been investigated for use on large spacecraft due to the high power requirements needed to both ionize the propellant and generate the applied magnetic field in order to accelerate the plasma. Recent advances in technology, such as high temperature superconductors (HTS) and miniaturized cryocoolers have presented the opportunity for AF-MPDT to be utilized on smaller spacecraft platforms such as CubeSats. This thesis uses mission design modelling to predict expected spacecraft performance when operating an AF-MPDT capable of 30mN of thrust, with an applied field strength of 0.3T on a 12U CubeSat. Power, thermal and orbital analysis found the spacecraft to remain power positive over the expected life-cycle, and capable of raising the apogee altitude by 60km through 9 sequenced low energy burn maneuvers, each of 14min in duration. Active and passive thermal control systems onboard the spacecraft support both the cooling of HTS components, and absorption of large heat loads during thruster burn. Thermal modelling predicts the miniaturised cryocooler has enough heat lift to bring the HTS magnet into an operating regime of 77K after 8h, however the passive heat rejection system on the hot end lacks enough radiative area to support consistent operation of the cryocooler. The onboard power system, including four articulating 6U face arrays capable of harvesting 100W of continuous power in LEO charge two independent batteries; one at typical bus voltage to support the standard spacecraft operation and the other to facilitate the power demanded to operate the AF-MPDT. Increasing power density within the CubeSat platform expands the potential capabilities and supports the operation of high efficiency AF-MPDT thruster with HTS coils. Large disturbance torques due to dipole interaction between the high current densities of the HTS coils and the geomagnetic potential have been eliminated using coupled spacecraft architecture and attitude control methods. Bedrock geology of DFDP-2B, central Alpine Fault, New Zealand During the second phase of the Alpine Fault, Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP) in the Whataroa River, South Westland, New Zealand, bedrock was encountered in the DFDP-2B borehole from 238.5–893.2 m Measured Depth (MD). Continuous sampling and meso- to microscale characterisation of whole rock cuttings established that, in sequence, the borehole sampled amphibolite facies, Torlesse Composite Terrane-derived schists, protomylonites and mylonites, terminating 200–400 m above an Alpine Fault Principal Slip Zone (PSZ) with a maximum dip of 62°. The most diagnostic structural features of increasing PSZ proximity were the occurrence of shear bands and reduction in mean quartz grain sizes. A change in composition to greater mica:quartz + feldspar, most markedly below c. 700 m MD, is inferred to result from either heterogeneous sampling or a change in lithology related to alteration. Major oxide variations suggest the fault-proximal Alpine Fault alteration zone, as previously defined in DFDP-1 core, was not sampled. Virginia Gail Toy
