Probably done while the artist was accompanying Donald McLean on a trip from Wellington to Hawkes Bay, to acquire land. The pair left Wellington in December 1850. The homestead belonged to Thomas Purvis Russell and his brothers (Henry, Robert and John) and sister (Anne), who squatted in the Wairarapa from 1847. [Smith, William Mein] 1799-1869 :Helen's first home. [ca 1860] A two-storied house with associated farm buildings, a garden in front, hills behind, native bush to the right. Possibly in the Wairarapa The identity of 'Helen' has not been established. An early photographic file print of the watercolour was captioned 'Mrs Helen Russell's home' with the associated information that the home's owner was neither Mrs Thomas Purvis Russell, nor Mrs Henry Robert Russell. However, it is likely that "Helen" is the daughter of William Mein Smith and Louisa. She was their first New Zealand born child. She married Robert Russell, a pastoralist, in 1859; and they later moved to England. According to 'New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Strait Guardian' newspaper dated 25 April1860, Helen gave birth to a daughter on 17 April at the residence of Captain W M Smith in Wairarapa. Thomas Purvis Russell

RUSSELL, THOMAS PURVIS (1819-1906) was born in Scotland, and came to New Zealand as a young man with his brothers. He took up land first in the Wairarapa and then in Hawkes Bay. He was the owner of the Woburn estate (now Hatuma), the acquisition of which by the Government led to long litigation. After parting with that property, he retired to live in Warroch, Kinross-shire, Scotland, where he died on 30 Jan 1906. Russell was a member of the Wellington Provincial Council for Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay (1856-57), and of the Hawkes Bay Council for Waipukurau (1863-67). He married (1859) Mary Glass, daughter of J. P. Sainsbury (Bath).
