Clifden & Districts Settlers - Bradley Bros WW1 Memorial Entry | Images of print copies of information on the Bradley Bros in WW1, Richard (Dick) William Russon Bradley, Trooper #17617 & James (Jim) Winter Bradley, Pvt #10764, along with various other related photos. Images 1 to 5 - information pages on the Bradley Bros, created by S Best, licensed CC BY - please use attribution. Images 8 & 10 - St Andrews Anglican Church of Ōtautau Honours Board, taken by S Best, licensed CC BY - please use attribution. While the brothers were technically not from the Clifden District, their names appear on the Clifden Roll of Honour, so they are remembered as being from this area. They lived further west at Belmont, which was later called Mangapiri, then at Te Mara and Tūātapere, respectively. The text from these information pages, which our own digitising archivist has created as part of an ongoing community project to memorialise district soldiers, starting some years ago, reads as follows: "Bradley, Richard (Dick) William Russon: Trooper, 42nd Mounted Rifles, NZEF - WW1 #17617 Bradley, James (Jim) Winter: Wellington Infantry Battalion, J Company, NZEF - WWI #10764 Both Richard “Dick” William Russon Bradley and his youngest brother James Winter Bradley, were son’s of William Henry & Minnie Eliza (née Russon) Bradley. Their parents were both from England and previously immigrated to Australia where they met and this was also where young Dick was born at Fitzroy, Melbourne Victoria according to the birth records held there. A birth notice inserted in the local paper records the day of Richard “Dick” Bradley’s birth as being 12 December 1880. Richard William Russon Bradley, known as “Dick” was the eldest son of William and Minnie Bradley. He travelled with his parents age 2 to Aotearoa NZ. He arrived at Belmont Station where his father was hired to work. Apparently, they arrived in Bluff, made their way to Ōtautau and then spent 2 days by bullock wagon heading to Belmont Station, where his parents worked for many years. In written records of the district, we find that ‘Bradley & Son’s’ did cartage contracting for the locals and that the shed and shearers quarters used to store the chaff and oats for their two waggon teams as well as the farm horses, was also a great social centre and base for the district church services. Richard or Dick as he was known, was a skilled farmer, even before he signed up for WW1. In 1916 as his brother James was heading off to the front, Dick was in the news for having one of the local district wool clips that obtained the most amount of money. He did not come out on top but he did manage to succeed in being paid more than his father for the season’s fleece! Initially Richard “Dick” R Bradley of Mangapiri also enlisted in 1916, but it was not until 1918 that R “Dick” W Bradley headed off for war service and he was farewelled during his final leave. Dick’s leaving ceremony was held at the local Belmont Hall, a site that saw many a social occasion. Local man James King presented a gift to Dick on his departure, and it was noted that like his brother before him, it had taken more than one attempt for this brave man to get to volunteer for the war too. Other men of the district, notably Messrs Cuthbert and Fowle of Clifden, spoke in praise of Dick and his service to the war effort. Mr Andrew Glendinning was the Master of Ceremonies for the occasion, which progressed into the small hours. Now two Bradley sons were to fight in WW1. Interestingly, at his enrolment (or should we say re-enrollment) on 8/2/1918 Dick says he was 18th NZFA (Field Artillery) in the NZEF, but was discharged as medically unfit. This is also shown on his Military History Sheet, and that he had served in NZ 26/6/16-17/11/16. At re-examination Dick is noted to have VDH or Valvular disease of the heart, and due to this he was classified as C1. Despite this condition, he lived a full active life, passing away in his 60’s. Dick was to arrive in Egypt on 21 November 1918, after the fighting in the Middle East had already stopped in September. Unfortunately he had to head to isolation once in Egypt, due to many diseases afflicting the troops there. Dick was taken down with sickness on more than one occasion and was even taken to hospital twice. He was a Trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles for a time and was later appointed acting Sergeant at camp, while undertaking the duties of Educational Instructor. It was July 1919 before Dick was to head home again, having managed to miss most of the hostilities, through no fault of his own. It is thought his recurrent sickness may have been a reason he was not sent with his Canterbury Mounted troops into Gallipoli for the short time they were occupying the Penninsula at the end of the war. By the beginning of 1919 Dick was home again and solidly back into his farming business. At the district Ōtautau Sale in March of that year, RWR “Dick” Bradley had sold 10 of his bullocks at £13 15/- . Then in 1920 at a Wallacetown stock sale, RW “Dick” Bradley again had a win in his bullock sales, this time procuring the highest price at that sale for five of his big bullocks from his Mangapiri property. The best sold for nearly double the last lot, at £24 10/-. It is said that at age 30, Dick purchased one of John McCall snr’s properties, called ‘Te Mara’ and this man was later to became Dick’s father in-law. This can be further verified by the fact that Te Mara was purchased by Richard Bradley from John McCall snr., on 20 February 1911. Dick was fabulous at keeping diaries, which give is some insight into the working conditions of the land there. Rabbits were a huge curse. One entry says he set 100 traps for rabbits. In another, it says, “Very wet, 50 rabbits”. His diary entries were very practical writings, with no emotion or feelings ever recorded. In 1921 Dick married Marion Warnock McCall, a daughter of John McCall snr. and Marion (née Warnock), the family were long-term residents of Eastern Bush. When they sold up to another local family the Moffat’s in 1919, Marion moved to Invercargill with them, and stayed until her marriage in 1921. The couple must have known each other previously, as it was a small, close-knit community. It is likely that the war intervened in their romance and potentially even delayed their marriage. But it would be great for family members to fill in some of these questions and blanks if possible. In 1900 Dick is even recorded as being a farmer at Eastern Bush in the Electoral Records, then a little later on in the early 1900’s he was a shepherd at Bellmont/Bellemont/Belmont (various spellings are used). It is likely that Richard was at school with Marion, although she was around 8 years younger than him, being born in 1889, but she definitely attended there and even passed her standard 6 exams. The early Eastern Bush School records show the first pupils there included those listed below: Ewen Bradley (“Dick’s” younger brother) Richard (Dick) Bradley Elizabeth McCall (Marion’s elder sister) David McCall & John McCall (Marion’s older brothers) The couple had three girls, the first Lorna was born 1922, then Marion born in 1923 and last of all was Minnie Elizabeth, born in 1926. They sold Te Mara in 1943 and retired, moving into Invercargill. Dick Bradley, previously of ‘Te Mara’ died in 10.9.45, aged 64 and he is buried in Invercargill Eastern Cemetery, with his wife Marion Warnock (née McCall), who lived to the grand age of 101! Whereas Dick’s brother James Winter Bradley or “Jim”, was born 1890 at Mangapiri, Belmont Station to William and Minnie Bradley, the forth and youngest son of six children. He worked on his parent’s farm and in Jim 1915 tried to enlist with the army. But Jim did not pass due to a weakness in his foot when at first, he volunteered. James Bradley, the youngest son of William and Minnie Bradley of Mangapiri, was farewelled to take part in WW1 in December of 1915. The locals, led by William Glendinning gathered to send off this brave young man who was said to have persisted in his attempts to go to the front. At this time, it is noted that young James Bradley was the only district representative in the war, so those who gathered had a special pride in his gallantry and upcoming service to, “God, King, and Country” as it was seen then. Jim was later accepted into war service in the mounted branch. He was a private in the 2nd Battalion Otago Regiment. D Squad 11th M.R. Cyclists Co. The theatres of Operation he served in were with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force and in Western Europe. Jim was to fight in Abeele (now spelled Abele in modernised Flemish - a village on the international border between France and Belgium) and was wounded in action in Etaples, Northern France. He served three years overseas. After returning home, Jim married Hazel Bonney in 1920, the couple lived at Tūātapere and had two sons. Jim continued farming throughout his life. It also appears that at one stage he was in the business of “rabbiting” as per the below photo, although whether this was commercially or as a contractor or by himself, we don’t know. If anyone can provide more information that would help. Some family memories which are kindly supplied by descendant Dale Sharp from Australia, are that Jim was a quiet man who enjoyed his gardens. James or “Jim” died on 6th April 1960 and is buried in the Tūātapere Cemetery. Even though his wife Hazel remarried a few years later, to George Gibbs in 1965, she was buried with her first husband Jim, probably as the grave site was already set up for her." MEMORIALS: The “Bradley Brothers” are remembered on the Roll of Honour, at Clifden Southland which is on the Suspension Bridge and the St Andrews Anglican Honours Board from the district church at Ōtautau, which is the subject of another entry in this archive, on CWA.159.900.010 They are also in the Online Centotaph at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, for which a link can be found below, in the Place Notes. The above family and historical research was undertaken by Social Historian and Archivist Suzie Best of Central & Western Archive, with some input from descendants in regards to the brothers personal lives, as and where noted above. This WW1 Memorial information entry is licensed as CC BY to the author – please attribute to them if sharing or using the information." More information about this family and the war effort of these two young men will be added in the future. In the meantime, please share your memories and stories of any of them that you know, or if you are related, please let us know, also if you have any more photos of any of them please. You can do this by adding a comment about it, at the bottom of the image page. | Best, Suzie | Central and Western Murihiku Southland Archive / Central and Western Murihiku Southland Archive |

William James Dickie | DICKIE, WILLIAM JAMES (1870-1921) was born at Cobden and educated on the Coast. For some time he was employed in Greymouth and thereafter in business with his father. Owing to ill-health he turned to farming and after some years experience in Westland bought a property near Rakaia. He farmed also at Methven. Dickie took a great interest in public affairs, being for many years a member of the Ashburton county council and hospital board and of the Ashburton and Methven A. and P. association. Defeating C. A. C. Hardy in 1911, he represented Selwyn in Parliament till 1919, when he was defeated by Sir William Nosworthy. Dickie died on 24 Jun 1921. He married a niece of James Peryman (Greymouth). Hansard, 23 Jun 1921; Grey River Argus, 25 Jun 1921. Portrait: Parliament House. | Volume 1, page 119 |
William Dick Murison | MURISON, WILLIAM DICK (1837-77) was born at Alyth, Forfarshire, and got his education at the High School in Edinburgh. He came to Otago in 1856 in the Strathmore, with Dr Hulme, and after spending two years in and about Dunedin took up a run in the Maniototo with his brother James. They spent some months opening up the easiest way to approach the property through the Shag valley. In the spring of 1858 they were encamped at Swinburn, on the east side of the Maniototo plain, and established their homestead at the foot of Rough Ridge. The brothers went through many hardships, and the financial depression forced them to give up their property. William had a penchant for public life. In 1863 he was elected to the Provincial Council for Manuherikia, which he represented for 18 months. In 1864 he was a member of the executive for a short time. When he resigned in 1865 there was a suspicion that he had done so to permit F. D. Bell to be elected. The electors resented the supposed arrangement by proposing Macpherson, who defeated Bell at the poll. In 1866 Murison was elected M.H.R. for Waikouaiti; he resigned in 1868. He was interested in public affairs, and his right place was obviously in Dunedin. He was one of the small band who in 1865 guaranteed the fund for the Dunedin Exhibition. He strongly supported the establishment of Otago University. He was one of the promoters also of the Otago benevolent institution, and was a founder and first treasurer of the Otago Institute. As an intelligent observer of nature he was a valuable member of this learned society. In 1877 he read a paper on the wild dog of New Zealand, and in 1870 a paper on moa remains in Otago. He was constantly referred to as to his observations during his early days on the land. For a while he was president of the Acclimatisation Society, which he did much to develop. From the time of its formation Murison was a director of the Otago Daily Times and Witness Co., of which he was a large shareholder. During the absence of Vogel from the province he several times had control of the Times, and he succeeded Barton as its editor, becoming in 1871 permanent editor of both papers. In this post he showed great ability and natural capacity, giving to the papers "a large, liberal, and cultured intelligence, a most unbending integrity, and a most earnest desire to do the right always, and the right alone. Calm and temperate in the expression of his opinions, almost judicial in the extreme impartiality with which he expressed himself, he conveyed even to those who at times differed widely from him the impression of having formed his judgment after full and calm consideration." His gentleness of manner, sound judgment, urbanity, and kindliness endeared him to all. He was a prominent figure in the cricket field, but had to abandon the game about 1866 owing to ill-health. Murison died on 28 Dec 1877. Otago P.C. Proc.; Trans. N.Z. Inst.; O.D.T. Diamond Jubilee; Evening Star, 29 Dec 1877; Otago Daily Times, 16 Jan 1875; 18 Jul 1890 (p). | Volume 2, page 58 |
