Active living architecture | RESEARCH QUESTION: How can a single piece of architecture be designed to encourage people to expend calories through physical activity on a daily basis and promote healthier eating, with the aim of shifting them away from lifestyles that lead to obesity? This thesis project is an architectural response to the global obesity epidemic. Obesity prevalence rates are increasing around the world at such an alarming rate, that a problem which was not a pressing issue two generations ago, is now threatening to be a health issue on a scale the world has never seen before. The consequences of the obesity epidemic are far reaching and devastating. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and premature loss of life are but a few of the possible consequences. The question for the architectural profession is: Does architecture have a role to play in helping to reduce the prevalence of obesity? Although easy to say that architecture is not responsible for peoples’ increasingly sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating, research around the world is beginning to suggest differently. This project is an exploration, based on literature reviews and precedent studies, on how one piece of architecture can be designed to encourage the expenditure of calories through physical activity on a daily basis and promote healthier eating, with the aim of shifting people away from lifestyles that lead to obesity. | Weavers, William | Research Bank / Unitec

Cities is Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino presented | Cities is Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino presented by Alex Monteith as a list of Invisible Cities’ adjectival collective common compound concrete countable mass plural proper possessive singular uncountable nouns and page numbers in chronological order as printed in the 1997 Vintage publication translated from the Italian by William Weaver http://www.alexmonteith.com/work_detail.php?id=64 | Monteith, Alexandra | ResearchSpace@Auckland / The University of Auckland Library
TRANSLATING ITALO CALVINO: HOW CLOSE READING AND COMPARISONS CAN ILLUMINATE THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES OF THE TRANSLATION PROCESS | I have chosen to translate passages from two works by Italo Calvino (1923-1985) into English. The first, a novel, was his first publication, Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno, Torino: Einaudi, October 1947. Two English translations of it have been published: the first, The Path to the Nest of Spiders by Archibald Colquhoun, London: Jonathan Cape, 1956, and the second, The Path to the Spiders’ Nests (including the author’s 1964 Preface, translated by William Weaver), by Martin McLaughlin, New York: Random House, 1998. It is the first of these that I have used as a comparison with my own translation. Interestingly, Colquhoun’s translation was re-published by Penguin in 2009 in a form revised by McLaughlin. Colquhoun (1912-1964) was a leading early translator of modern Italian literature into English. As well as those of Calvino, his translations of Manzoni and Lampedusa were highly successful. He was the first recipient of the PEN Translation prize. | Twigg, Paddy | Neke. The New Zealand Journal of Translation Studies / Victoria University of Wellington
