36867 World War I, 1914-1918 Statement summary – 36860 Private C.J. Hughes Captured near Meteren on 16 April 1918, Hughes was part of a group of around 100 men overrun by German forces. Following capture, he was marched past Armentières and forced to carry shells without adequate food. After reporting sick, he was transferred through several camps in Germany, including Stangard and Schneidemühl. He later undertook hard labour near Hohensalza on poor rations. After threats from guards, he attempted escape but was recaptured and punished with confinement on bread and water. He remained in quarantine until November 1918 and was repatriated via Danzig to Leith. (Source: Prisoner of War – Statements collected, 7 December 1918, Archives New Zealand, Wellington (R24428203)).
