| Francis Edward Stewart | STEWART, FRANCIS EDWARD (1833-1904) was born at Clifton, England, the son of Captain Thomas Stewart, R.N., with whom he came to Van Diemen's Land in his own ship, the Anna Watson, in 1839. In 1847 he accompanied the Barney expedition to found the Gladstone colony, and he was in the wreck of the Lord Auckland on Facing Island. In 1856 he opened the Christchurch branch. Returning to New Zealand in 1863 from a two years' visit to England, he married Agnes, daughter of Robert Park (q.v.). He represented Rakaia in the Provincial Council (1865-66) and Papanui (1866-68), being provincial treasurer and for a while deputy superintendent. In 1869 Stewart sold his Racecourse Hill property and returned to Sydney, where he became chief inspector of the National Bank in 1879. WWII Military Draft Lists
Edward Ewart 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
