23753 World War II, 1939-1945 Sergeant L. F. R. Jackson (Campo PG 57 - PM3200) Letter: 9 December We are having a cold but fine winter. Last year the boys reckon there was snow in October, one of the worst winters for a good many years. You would be having it fairly warm now. We get a special Christmas parcel from the Red Cross with a cake and pudding in it. Gosh it will be good!! (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 10, May 1943, p.21)) Sergeant L. F. R. Jackson (CCPG 57, PM 3200) Letter: 4 January Last week my mate and I put our sugar together and made some fudge. You would have laughed to see us making it. Still, it was good. I could not remember the recipe for a while but we got it right in the end. Cigarettes are very plentiful here so, if you can, send a parcel of chocolate - that is what I miss most. We had a good Christmas in hospital. We all got a special Christmas parcel from the Red Cross. It contained a cake, a very rich pudding, chocolate biscuits, chocolate, sweets (very good ones), tinned meat, milk, sugar and cheese. You can imagine the feed we had. The Italians gave us nuts, wine, a good cigar, chocolate biscuits and fruit. We were eating all day and most of us had indigestion that evening. It was like old times. When the war is over, we'll have Christmas Day every day for months. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (Special, June 1943, p.6)) Sergeant L. F. R. Jackson (Stalag VIII A) Letter: 22 November It is getting very cold but still dry. Got NZ parcels this week and they are very nice too. Our Christmas parcels arrived in the camp this week and we are looking forward to them. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 19, April 1944, p.10)) Married/WWII Married/WWII Mrs. A. WWII Military Draft Lists
Frederick Jackson 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
