273688 World War II, 1939-1945 Sergeant G. E. Armstrong, MM; Bunnythorpe; born Palmerston North, 29 Jun 1920; tractor driver. (Source: Cody, J.F. NZ Engineers, Middle East. p.640.) 'The vital question of getting tanks and support arms across the Uso was dealt with by putting down an Ark at a suitable point on 25 Battalion's front. As soon as the material was at the site a company of infantry formed a protective screen and the artillery laid on harassing fire, both to cover the noise of the working dozer and to protect the infantry screen. On 26 Battalion's front a suitable ford had been located, and after the banks had been dozed to get the tanks over, Somerfield track was laid for wheeled traffic. The company war diary mentions that there were no casualties but some lucky escapes. Sapper Armstrong could fairly be included among the latter. He was the dozer driver who broke down the riverbanks preparatory to the track being laid. There was no covering party for this job and not sufficient artillery fire to drown the noises of the dozer, which attracted considerable mortar fire. An enemy party got close enough to use their pistols, whereupon Armstrong retired to the cover of some trees until the patrol's departure, when the work was resumed. He received an MM for his tenacity and devotion to duty.' (Source: Cody, J.F. NZ Engineers, Middle East. p. 640.) 29 Jun 1920 Mrs. R.M. Armstrong, 9 Milson's Line, Palmerston N. | George Armstrong | ARMSTRONG, GEORGE (1822-1905) was born at St. Johns, Nova Scotia. He first visited Banks Peninsula in command of a trading brig, and left his ship, the Phoenix, at Hawkes Bay in 1846. While in command of the Wellington schooner Edward Stanley, engaged in carrying stores for the troops at Wanganui, he was court-martialled for taking his vessel to the rescue of a settler who was attacked by natives. Armstrong married Miss Cummerfield (Foxton) and settled in Akaroa, taking the Bruce hotel. Returning from a visit with his family to America, he bought the schooner Mary Louisa at Sydney and traded between Wellington and Akaroa. He bought land at German Bay, and established the Mount Vernon homestead, afterwards acquiring other land from the Government. Armstrong represented Akaroa in the Provincial Council (1861-62) and Wainui (1862). Early in 1866 he was elected to Parliament for the same constituency, which he represented till 1870. He died in 1905. His son, GEORGE ARMSTRONG (1853-1932) was first elected in 1879 to the Akaroa borough council, on which he served for fifty years (for nearly 30 years of which he was mayor). He represented the borough on the North Canterbury hospital board and the Banks Peninsula power board, and was chairman of the Akaroa High School and a member of the Wainui road board. In 1879 he married Mary, daughter of Captain Robert Gray (Nelson). His death occurred on 6 Nov 1932. Canterbury P.C. Proc; J. Hay; Akaroa Mail, 8 Nov 1932; Lyttelton Times, 7 Nov 1932. | Volume 1, page 25 |

WWII Military Draft Lists
George Armstrong 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
