| Henry Edwards Handley | HANDLEY, HENRY EDWARDS, (1836-92) was born at Grantham, Lincolnshire, his father being a partner in the banking house of Philip Handley, Peacocke and Handley. He held a commission in the 2nd Royal Dragoons, served in the Crimea, and commanded the right troop in the charge of the heavy brigade at Balaclava, where he showed conspicuous courage and was wounded. He afterwards came to New Zealand; farmed for a few years at Oakura (Taranaki) and was field adjutant on Herrick's expedition to Waikaremoana (1869). He was for some time in the Legislative department and, having land in Taranaki, contested the Omata seat in the Provincial Council against W. Carrington (1872). He afterwards lived in Auckland. Handley was a prominent figure on the turf and afterwards for some years wrote sporting notes under the nom de plume 'Old Turfite'. He died on 24 Jun 1892. Cycl. Henry Edwards 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
