| Henry Hardington | HARDINGTON, HENRY (1828-87) was born in England and arrived in Auckland in the early forties. He first kept the Victoria hotel on the beach, and later the Exchange in the Crescent. In partnership with S. A. Wood, he managed a horse bazaar and auction mart at the Greyhound. Hardington had great influence with the natives, and was on terms of confidence with Tamati Ngapora and other Waikato chiefs living at Mangere. On the outbreak of the war (1860), he joined the Auckland Cavalry volunteers, in which he became captain (1863), and served throughout the Waikato war. After the war he controlled the Onehunga coaches and held mail-carrying contracts for some years. He took a great interest in the Auckland Racing Club, of which he was one of the promoters and acted as clerk of the course both at Epsom and at Ellerslie. He died on 31 Jul 1887. Gudgeon (p); N.Z. Herald, 3 Jul 1880, 2 Aug 1887. | Volume 1, page 195 |

WWII Military Draft Lists
Henry Harding 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
