34835 World War II, 1939-1945 Padre Captain H. A. McD. Mitchell (P.G. 40) Letter: 2/3/1942 I am in a very lovely part of Italy but cannot say where. It is a large camp and I am the only Padre or indeed officer in it. The Padre's work alone will leave me very little spare time and in addition I am president of the welfare committee, which takes a lot of time. I have been here about a week and have arranged for morning prayers. Vespers are to be held in the huts each evening and 4 lectures each week, 2 on Christian doctrine and 2 on general subjects. A mid-week service will be conducted in turn by a rota of 10 men who have taken services in civil life. 2 Bible classes have been arranged for Sunday afternoons and 2 church services one Church of England and the other Free Church, each followed by a communion service. We had a great time yesterday - the Church of England service was held out of doors in the morning and was very large, the Free Church service indoors in the evening when only half those who wished to attend could be accommodated. Then I am in my room for an hour a day to receive chaps and they do come. I can see soon that I will be conducting quite a big communion class. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 5, August 1942, p.10)) Chaplain Capt. H. A. Mitchell (Campo PG 52 - PM 3100) Letter: 29 December Christmas again - the 3rd I have spent away. The day was wet and gloomy but I take my hat off to the men for the way they stood up to it. The Christmas Red Cross parcel was a gem and made all the difference to the men. It included a cake, a plum-duff, a tin of sweets, jam, margarine, sugar, chocolate biscuits etc. I wandered round some of the huts, which they had decorated as best they could and saw them having dinner. They were as happy as children. It made the heart glad. On Christmas Eve members of the Roman Catholic, Church of England and Free Church choirs went round the camp singing carols. That was appreciated. On Christmas morning I had a communion service with more than 350 present and in the evening a carol service with more there in spite of the cold. The spirit of the camp has been just splendid. The boys are all very optimistic. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 10, May 1943, p.24)) Married/WWII Married/WWII Mrs. H.A. WWII Military Draft Lists
Henry Mitchell 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
