15127 World War II, 1939-1945 H. R. Palmer (PG 57) Letter: 3/4/1942 It is a beautiful day, the opposite to the Good Friday we spent last year in the rain and mud, with snow in the air. Recently about half adozen former members of the NZ Field Hospital left here, in a trance at the glorious news that they were to be repatriated - going home!! One of these, WO2 Ron Jacks is a Christchurch man. Next to repatriation, the occasion we look forward to the most is the issue of Red Cross parcels. If the people responsible for the organisation, the planning, the packing and all the other work attendant on the delivery of these food parcels could only see the great joy of the men here on the occasions when we receive them, I'm sure they would be amply rewarded. Can you imagine grown men lying awake until the early hours of the morning, excited as a lot of kids, over the receipt of their parcels? I'm sure there's not a single man among us who is ever likely to forget parcels or the people responsible for them. We would all be plesed here if these few inadequate words could be published for them to see. Allan, Ron and I are well. WWII Military Draft Lists
Henry Palmer 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
