Retired as Brigadier. From the Royal New Zealand Artillery Association "It is with great sadness that we record the passing of Brigadier (Rtd) Ray Andrews CBE, on Tuesday 29th March. Brigadier Andrews served as the Colonel Commandant of the Regiment and was a Life Member of the Association. Upon graduating from RMC, he became an Instructor RNZA at CMT Battery at Papakura, followed by a posting to the RNZAF Flying School at Wigram, to complete AOP training. He then returned to 16 Field Regt at Papakura, which was reforming after its disbandment in South Korea. 1961 saw a posting to the British Army Flying Corps, flying operationally in Malaya, Brunei, and Borneo. With Lt Chris Brown RNZA, they were the first of a number of RNZA pilots to be posted there. Brigadier Andrews spent 1967 at Staff College, Queenscliff in Australia. A highlight of Brigadier Andrew's career was the year September 1969 - September 1970 he spent in Vietnam as BC of 161 Battery. After Vietnam in 1971 - 1973 he was posted to the 28th Commonwealth Brigade in Singapore as Brigade Major. During 1974-1976 he served as Chief of Staff of 3 Inf Bde Gp in Christchurch. In 1977 he was appointed to Fiji as Chief of Staff of the Fiji Royal Military Forces for 2 years, during which time he oversaw the insertion of the first Battalion into Lebanon. He stayed with the Battalion in Lebanon for 3 months to ensure they were operationally sound. On return to New Zealand in 1979 he took up the post of Director of Royal New Zealand Artillery at Army General Staff. From there in 1981 he was appointed as the Commander 2 Task Force at Palmerston North. In 1983 – 1984 he spent an interesting year long course, seconded to the Canadian Defence College. After another year, as Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Personnel), he was posted to Auckland as Commander Land Force Command. From there, 1987-1990 his final posting was as Defence Head, Liaison Staff, London. Brigadier Andrews was awarded the CBE in 1989. Retirement saw Brigadier Andrews busy with a period as Colonel Commandant RNZA during 1997 – 2003. From 1990 he has had honorary appointments in Old Comrades, Artillery Officers Messes and the RNZA Band. On 20 November 2013, Brigadier Andrews was made a Life Member of the Royal New Zealand Artillery Association. | John Andrews | ANDREWS, JOHN (1842-1932) was born in Somersetshire, England, and came to New Zealand in the Timandra. He was educated at a private school and afterwards at a night school in New Plymouth, while he worked with his father, an orchardist, at Hurdon. In the Taranaki war, after being several times rejected as too young, he served under Atkinson. He was present with the militia and volunteers at Waireka, Huirangi and Te Arei and employed in the convoy of stores. After the war he went to the South Island, visiting Gabriel's Gully and finding employment at sawmilling in Canterbury and the West Coast. Having married (1865) Emily Young (Aberdeen), he returned to Taranaki and took up land at Huirangi, where their child was baptised by Whiteley (1866). Andrews's first earnings were invested in the purchase of draught bullocks. He was greatly interested in public affairs, being a member of the road board and cemetery board at Huirangi, the education board (1885), the hospital board and the Taranaki county council. He represented Grey and Bell in the Provincial Council (1873-75). Andrews died in Apr 1932. Taranaki P.C. Minutes; Taranaki Herald, Apr 1932. Portraits: Taranaki Hist. Coll; General Assembly Library. | Volume 1, page 24 |

WWII Military Draft Lists
John Andrews 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.

| Andrews | John | 06 April 1870 | Ross better known as California Jack. He had been up the Totara Lagoon all day and on returning went ashore at a Chinaman's house who was holding a festival. He stayed there for some time, then returned to his boat, but was never seen alive again. A search was made, his boat was found stuck in the grass and Andrew's body was lying at the bottom of the lagoon. It was supposed he was sailing the boat up, and with the wind slackening he tried to take down the mast and so capsized the boat. | Totara Lagoon | AH Lists | Original Image |
