4410 World War II, 1939-1945 Driver J.F. Kerr was captured on Crete at Sparkia and held near Canea, initially in a former hospital repurposed as a prisoner-of-war camp. Despite German warnings and threats of violence for escape attempts, Kerr and fellow prisoner Gnr. Ken Payne (5 Field Regiment) escaped at dawn by crossing the north coast road. They found shelter and support among Greek villagers, receiving food and civilian clothing. The escape party, which grew to include Australians and a Cypriot, made an attempt to reach Gavdos Island by boat. When the vessel became unseaworthy, Kerr and one Australian rowed the group back to Crete, narrowly avoiding a German patrol. They later encountered resistance from local Greeks fearful of German reprisals and navigated shifting alliances and suspicions, including Kerr being temporarily mistaken for a German spy. Kerr remained in hiding on Crete for over a year, moving between villages, adopting a Greek alias, and forming ties with other Allied escapers, including Dudley Perkins and Tom Moyer. He assisted in escape plans and was eventually extracted by British submarine following contact with commandos involved in a raid on Maleme Aerodrome. Upon arrival in Egypt, Kerr handed over funds raised from Cretan supporters to assist other escapees. | John Kerr | KERR, JOHN (1830-98) was born in the south of Scotland and came to Nelson with his parents in the Fifeshire (1842). His father, John Kerr (1801-63) was an agricultural labourer and, having taken up a farm at Waimea West, used one of the first ploughs in the settlement (25 May 1842). He represented Waimea West in the Provincial Council (1857-63). After leaving school, the son assisted on the farm, but eventually took service in the Government brig. From this he settled at Port Underwood and engaged in whaling there and at Tory Channel. Some years later he opened a store. Kerr also represented Waimea West in the Provincial Council (1873-75) and later was M.H.R. for Waimea (1885-87) and for Motueka (1887-90). He had many interests in sawmilling and landowning, was part owner of the Tamdale station, and owned the Lake run at Rotoiti, where he died on 3 May 1898. Cycl. NZ, v; The Colonist, 10 May 1898. | Volume 1, page 248 |

John Kerr 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
