13253 World War II, 1939-1945 Corporal J. H. Smith (Camp N. 66) Letter: 17/2/1942 We are allowed to write a bit more now. I help in the sick parade which helps fill in the day. We had one parcel from the Red Cross and that lasted about 10 days - bacon, beans, 'Ovaltine', sardines etc. Now we soak half a loaf of bread in water, put in a few figs and boil, that makes a hot meal. There are some great meals made like that. I have seen Vesuvius, a grand sight with the sun shining on it. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 3, May 1942, pp.11-12)) Corporal J. H. Smith (PG 66) Letter 1: 7/2/1942 We had a visit from the Cardinal of Rome, who brought us games, we received a Christmas card from the Pope - a grand souvenir. We are hoping to send them home, they are signed by Pope Pius XII. Am still keeping body and soul together, even putting on weight. We are able to buy biscuits etc from our canteen, trade cigarettes for bread, bread for jam - it's a great life the sporting life. Letter 2: 3/3/1942 Am still alive and kicking. We have had a Red Cross parcel again, feels like Christmas day. If only the people who packed them could see us they would weep with joy. One chappie has just finished making a pudding, a small issue loaf cheese and jam with syrup to taste. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 6, October 1942, p.15)) Corporal J. H. Smith (Campo PG 52 - 3100) Letter: 14 November We had a service for Armistice Day which is also celebrated as King Vittoria's birthday. A prayer, some hymns, short speech and our bugler sounded the "Last Post", "Reveille" which was acknowledge by the Colonel of this camp. You will think I am leg-pulling but this week we had loud speakers installed in the camp area and we now have wireless with our PT classes. I have been speaking with a chap from Castleford, he made us a blower to boil the dixie, about 2.5 pints in 3 minutes, very good. The mail has just arrived but I have not been lucky. I am writing to Rome re my mail, it must be lost I think. (Source: The New Zealand prisoner of war pamphlet (No. 10, May 1943, p.19)) Separated/WWII Married/WWII Mrs. Ethel N. Joseph Smith 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
