Bruce William Thomas Richards
World War II, 1939-1945 Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club: "Bruce Richards was brought up and educated in Timaru where he joined the staff of the Mt Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company on leaving school. He was infected with the contagious enthusiasm for the mountains of Rudolph Wigley, the founder of the company, and had frequent tours of duty at the Hermitage, then under the company's control. He made several of the usual tourist climbs round the Hermitage but his chief interest was ski-ing and he was an early member of the Tasman and Aorangi Ski Clubs. On the outbreak of war, he enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was appointed to the post of R.T.O. with headquarters at Wellington Railway Station, where his efficiency and good nature made him well-known to practically every serviceman who passed through Wellington on leave or postings. He remained in the service until his retirement with the rank of Flight Lieutenant in 1962, when he held the post of Adjutant at the Air Force Base at Shelly Bay, Wellington. He served the Royal Family as baggage officer during the 1953-54 Royal visit to New Zealand, and at the end of the tour the Queen honoured him by making him a Member of the Victorian Order. He was subsequently awarded the M.B.E. in recognition of his service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force." Thomas Richards 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.
