| John Chapman Andrew | ANDREW, JOHN CHAPMAN (1822-1907) was the son of the Rev James Andrew, vicar of Whitby. Educated at Sedbergh school and at University College, Oxford, he graduated B.A. in 1844 and M.A. in 1847 (with honours in classics and mathematics). In 1845 he was elected a fellow and tutor of Lincoln College, but resigned the fellowship on his marriage in 1856 to Emma, daughter of the Rev H. Fendall, vicar of Crambe, Yorkshire. He was ordained deacon (1847) and priest (1848), and appointed vicar of St Michael's, Oxford. In 1856 Andrew emigrated to Canterbury in the Westminster, and made some explorations in the Mackenzie country and the Southern Alps. In 1857 he leased the Otamatata run, on the upper Waitaki, which he held till 1866, when he moved to the North Island, purchasing 18,200 acres at Castlepoint, upon which he resided after his return from England (1869). He gave the run the name 'Ica,' from his initials as stencilled on his wool bales. Andrew represented Wairarapa East in the Wellington Provincial Council (1867-75) and Wairarapa in Parliament (1871-77). He was chairman of the Whareama road board, a member of the Castlepoint county council and of the first Wellington education board. From 1876 to 1886 he was headmaster of Nelson College, resigning his seat in Parliament to attend to this duty. He was one of the founders of the University of New Zealand, and was a member of the senate (1874-1907), and vice-chancellor (1885-1905). While in Nelson he assisted to found the Nelson Philosophical Society. In 1880 he married (secondly) Emily Sarah, daughter of John Morgan (Hobart). About 1895 Andrew retired from farming and resided thereafter at Otaki, where he died on 7 Dec 1907. Nelson Coll. Reg.; Wellington P.C. Proc.; Who's Who N.Z., 1908; Col. Gent.; Cycl. | John Andrews | ANDREWS, JOHN (1842-1932) was born in Somersetshire, England, and came to New Zealand in the Timandra. He was educated at a private school and afterwards at a night school in New Plymouth, while he worked with his father, an orchardist, at Hurdon. In the Taranaki war, after being several times rejected as too young, he served under Atkinson. He was present with the militia and volunteers at Waireka, Huirangi and Te Arei and employed in the convoy of stores. After the war he went to the South Island, visiting Gabriel's Gully and finding employment at sawmilling in Canterbury and the West Coast. Having married (1865) Emily Young (Aberdeen), he returned to Taranaki and took up land at Huirangi, where their child was baptised by Whiteley (1866). Andrews's first earnings were invested in the purchase of draught bullocks. He was greatly interested in public affairs, being a member of the road board and cemetery board at Huirangi, the education board (1885), the hospital board and the Taranaki county council. He represented Grey and Bell in the Provincial Council (1873-75). Andrews died in Apr 1932. Taranaki P.C. Minutes; Taranaki Herald, Apr 1932. Portraits: Taranaki Hist. | John Andrew Millar | MILLAR, JOHN ANDREW (1855-1915) was born at Jullundur, India, the son of Major-General J. C. Millar, of the Bengal Staff Corps. He was educated in Edinburgh. In 1870 he sailed for New Zealand with the intention of becoming a sheep farmer, but took a liking to the sea and after serving his apprenticeship to Patrick Henderson and Co. he became an officer in the Shaw Savill and Albion Co. (1881). Between that date and 1887 he was engaged in the Home and the New Zealand coastal service both as officer and as captain. In 1887 he became general secretary of the Federated Seamen's Union. The outbreak of the maritime strike in Australia, and its extension to New Zealand (1890) brought Millar into prominence, and he distinguished himself by the resourceful manner in which he conducted the affairs of the federation throughout the struggle. He was secretary also of the maritime council. In the years following the strike Millar attained some eminence in the labour movement and was instrumental in promoting the Liberal-Labour federation in politics. In 1890 seamen were granted special electoral rights. Millar opposed James Mills for Chalmers and was defeated by 874 votes to 645. At the following election (1893) he defeated E. G. Allen by 1,748 votes to 1,627. In 1896 he was elected for the City of Dunedin, which he represented till 1905. Thereafter he was member for Dunedin Central (1905-08), and for Dunedin West (1908-14). He did not seek re-election in 1914 but was shortly afterwards called to the Legislative Council (Jun 1915). Millar soon gained a useful mastery of parliamentary procedure, and in 1899 was chairman of the labour bills committee. In 1900 he was a member of the royal commission on federation, and in 1903 was elected chairman of committees. He was not chosen for office under Seddon, but in Ward's reconstruction (1906) he was Minister of Customs, Labour and Marine. In the following year he carried through a tariff bill with considerable ability, and on the retirement of Hall-Jones he assumed responsibility also for the administration of Railways. Millar administered all these portfolios until the Government went out of office (Mar 1912). He was widely favoured as the successor of Ward, and his succession would undoubtedly have influenced the course of events in the following years; but with Mackenzie's accession to office Millar's future was decided, and he remained thereafter a private member until his death (on 15 Oct 1915). He was highly respected and had considerable influence in Liberal politics. In the session of 1908 Millar introduced a bill to establish industrial councils in place of the conciliation boards. He was one of the originators of Labour Day. N.Z.P.D., 1893-1914 (notably 10 May 1916); Paul; Condliffe; Stewart and Rossignol; Scholefield, N.Z. Evol.; N.Z. Chess Book, 1922; Cycl. N.Z., iv; N.Z. WWII Military Draft Lists
John Andrew 🔍 ASHFrom 1940-45, men aged 18-46 were selected by ballot for potential service with the Armed Forces under New Zealand's wartime conscription. Twenty-four ballot lists were published in the NZ Gazette.
NOTE: Being listed in a ballot did not necessarily mean the person served in the military. Some had already volunteered, others were found medically unfit, granted deferment or exemption on appeal, or were never called up for active service. These records document those selected for possible service, not confirmed service personnel.

| Andrews | John | 06 April 1870 | Ross better known as California Jack. He had been up the Totara Lagoon all day and on returning went ashore at a Chinaman's house who was holding a festival. He stayed there for some time, then returned to his boat, but was never seen alive again. A search was made, his boat was found stuck in the grass and Andrew's body was lying at the bottom of the lagoon. It was supposed he was sailing the boat up, and with the wind slackening he tried to take down the mast and so capsized the boat. | Totara Lagoon | AH Lists | Original Image |
